One of Los Angeles’ great cultural treasures is its street murals. This sprawling metropolis of 34,000 square miles offers an endless canvas for street artists: buildings, walls, freeways, stores, offices, and playgrounds.

LA is not a single city; it is a mosaic of communities, many of which are independent cities, each with its own unique character, making this one of the largest multi-ethnic regions in the world, home to 20 million people from over 140 countries, speaking 224 different languages.

Ethnic diversity is a source of energy and inspiration for LA’s artists, who often paint murals celebrating the cultural identity of their own neighborhoods. The murals are as diverse as their creators. There are powerful works promoting social justice (“The Resurrection of Watts”), whimsical fantasy scenes painted by school children (“Monarch”), history lessons (“Mexico Tenochtitlan: A Sequence of Time and Culture”), abstract art (“Good Times are Coming”), and one of the longest street murals in the world, the “Great Wall of Los Angeles,” stretching more than half a mile, telling the story of LA from prehistoric to modern times.

In June of 2021, a filmmaker approached me with the idea of making a music video featuring LA street murals. He showed me about a hundred photos that he had collected. Fascinated by the concept, I watched a loop of the photos and started jotting down musical ideas. As I arranged the ideas into a musical narrative, I reflected on my life since moving to LA, and so the piece became not just a musical journey through LA’s neighborhoods but also a journey through 35 years of personal memories.
