This project is the culmination of a year of “sittings” at the piano, in which I simply sit as one sits for meditation; instead of focusing on the breath or mantra, I focus on harmonic motion. I am excited to share these before Christmas- raw, in a limited “preview” edition of 100 CDs- without sending them to a mastering engineer to optimize and balance. I’ll do that next year and include more sittings in a re-release. The tracks were recoreded on the Yamaha Clavinova Grand- a hybrid instrument which combines the hammer-and-string action of a traditional piano with digital technology. As a classically trained pianist, my first forays into recording with a digital piano reproduction felt sacreligious. But as the technology (and my fluency with it) improves, I sense that we are in a period of transition similar to the early 1700s, when the pianoforte instrument was introduced at the time of the harpsichord.
